Paris Hilton is paid thousands by the top designers to wear their clothes but, when shopping for herself, heiress refuses to spend a fortune. In Sydney, she snubbed the top boutiques to pay a visit to Rif Raf Clothing - tops for $19.95. "She came in with her bodyguards and 100 people trailing her... We closed the doors and she stayed for 30 minutes." She is photographed in Gucci and Versace, but she headed to baby doll dresses by Lovely Girl. "Paris was a determined shopper. I think she has experience in that department. She's like a lot of the girls who come in here. They want something fashionable that's affordable. That's common sense, and she's got plenty of it."

Every inch a perfect Hilton
Like any mother, Kathleen Richards wanted the best for her daughter, Kathy. She wanted Kathy to know all about sex, so she asked a young man to give her daughter "sex lessons" in his van. Kathy learned well, hitting the jackpot when she married Rick Hilton. 15 months after the wedding, in Feb 1981, Kathy gave birth to Paris. The Hilton name evoked class: Yet Paris is the epitome of shallow culture: best known for starring in a homemade video. She is often being photographed falling in and out of nightclubs, often drunk, and often in various states of undress.

Dumb, unskilful Paris Hilton is here to stay
Socialite Paris Hilton is famous for being famous. She did it backwards: Instead of becoming famous for being an actress or singer, like most celebrities, she got to act and sing because she was first famous. This is a woman who once said, "One of my heroes is Barbie. She may not do anything, but she always looks great doing it", tried to trademark her phrase "That's hot", joined the rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs in an effort to mobilise youth to consider voting in presidential election but it was later found that she had herself not voted or even registered to do so.

But he said her partying and rich-girl antics have irritated many others.

When another snapper came through, she screamed: "I said no more f*cking photos, why do you never f*cking listen?" Then she accused her security of losing her phone, which was found under her purse.

Paris Hilton: Naked ambition
"Newspapers write that I'm spoiled, and that all I do is dance on tabletops and party with friends." Paris Hilton is famous. She appears in a notorious video, she appears on tv, she is the heiress to a $50m hotel fortune. She turned 25 and she has the nearly there looks of the model she almost is. And with one crucial exception, she also appears to be supremely talentless. Her acting has been laughed at, her performance on tv has drawn scorn, her (successful) attempt to trademark the catchphrase "That's hot" has been widely mocked. Even her video performance with a then boyfriend received mixed reviews.

Ever since her rise to fame on the international party circuit, the debate has raged in the gossip columns. Is the heiress Paris Hilton really the most air-headed socialite the world has ever seen? Or, as her supporters claim, is her dizzy bimbo act so outrageous that it can only be a deliberate, if off-beat, self-marketing ploy? Her responses to a series of lawyers' questions reveal that the heir thinks that everyone in Europe speaks French, and believes that London is not in the United Kingdom.
